Mural painted during the ‘We Shine’ Light and Mural festival to celebrate local community leader Marie Costa. Now in her 80s Marie is part of the cultural fabric of Portsmouth, where she has worked as a nurse, teacher, carer, businesswoman, university governor and community volunteer since the 1960s when she arrived in the UK from Nigeria. She has been described as ‘formidable’, inspirational’, and ‘a doer’ and has worked tirelessly for decades to promote intercultural understanding.
The mural is located on the very prominent rear wall of the law courts which faces the Eldon Building. Eldon Building is the creative and cultural hub of Portsmouth University where I graduated, and now work as a Lecturer in the Portsmouth illustration department.
Thanks to Portsmouth Creates for the invitation & Form And Function for the fantastic curation.
